Padded Cotton Greaves for Medieval Reenactment and LARP
Superior Protection and Comfort for Your Legs
These padded guards are not just ordinary pieces of cloth. They are anatomically designed to contour the shape of your calf and shin. Vertical stitching holds the filling firmly in place, ensuring it doesn't bunch up or slide down to your ankle even after prolonged use. Inside, there is a layer of recycled multi-fibre wadding (a blend of wool, cotton, and polyester), which offers significantly better thermoregulation and breathability than cheap foam alternatives.
Fastening is achieved via classic lacing at the back of the calf. With a long, sturdy cotton cord and reinforced eyelets, you can adjust the fit precisely to your leg circumference or the thickness of the breeches worn underneath.

Historical Insight: Why Wear Padding?
In the Middle Ages, especially during the High and Late medieval periods, a warrior never wore plate armour directly on bare skin or over thin clothing. The foundation was always a gambeson and padded chausses (hose) on the legs. These greaves are a modern, modular adaptation of historical padded hose. They serve the same purpose – to absorb the kinetic energy of a blow. While steel armour stops a cut, it does not dampen the impact shock. Without this layer, a strike to the shin could result in a bone fracture despite the metal remaining intact.
Care and Maintenance
To ensure your greaves serve you well for as long as possible, treat them with care. Since they contain natural and recycled fibers, never wash them in a machine or use a tumble dryer. We recommend gentle hand washing in cold water (up to 30°C / 86°F). Use a mild detergent.
Do not wring the greaves by twisting them – this could tear the internal structure of the padding and cause lumping. Gently squeeze the water out and let them dry flat in the open air, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Store them in a dry place to prevent mould from forming in the padding.
Safety Warning
Although these greaves provide a certain level of protection, please remember that this is a textile product. They are not intended as standalone protection against steel weapons in full-contact combat (Buhurt, Battle of the Nations). For these activities, they serve strictly as a cushioning layer under steel greaves. For LARP or light sparring with soft padded weapons, you can wear them on their own. Avoid contact with sharp objects that could cut the cotton cover.
We recommend pairing these padded greaves with quality leather footwear and, of course, steel plate greaves to create an unbeatable combination.
