Padded Mittens (12th-14th C.) with Leather Palm
What Do They Offer You?
- Solid Protection: The outer side made of durable black cotton fabric with vertical quilting (as seen in the photo) and the internal padding approximately 5.5 mm thick reliably protect the back of your hand and fingers from blows and abrasions. They are ideal for foot soldiers and mercenaries in lighter armour.
- Perfect Grip: The inner palm and thumb are covered by a single layer of supple light brown leather (see photo). This ensures you don't lose sensitivity in your hand and can firmly and securely hold a sword, axe, spear, or any other weapon or tool.
- Thoughtful Details: The overall length of approx. 27.5 cm (10.8 inches) and width across the knuckles of approx. 12.5 cm (4.9 inches) will fit most adult men. For easier donning, there is a small slit on the inner side at the wrist. The width at the wrist is approx. 15 cm (5.9 inches).
- Durability and Style: The combination of sturdy canvas and quality leather guarantees that these mittens will last you through many battles. Plus, they look great and add authenticity to your costume! They are available in multiple colours (the photo shows the black and tan version).
Don't leave your hands unprotected! These mittens are an excellent compromise between protection, comfort, and functionality, exactly as needed by warriors of the High Middle Ages. They are robust, practical, and ready for action.
Historical Use:
Padded gloves and mittens of this type were a common part of the equipment for foot soldiers, spearmen, crossbowmen, and other combatants in lighter or incomplete armour during the period from the 12th to the 14th century. They provided basic hand protection against blows, chafing, and the cold, while the leather palm still allowed for a relatively good grip on a weapon. Sometimes they might have served as additional padding under metal gauntlets for those who could afford better protection.
Modern Use:
Today, you'll find these mittens highly useful for:
- Historical Fencing and Re-enactment (12th-14th Century): As authentic and functional hand protection.
- LARP: To complete costumes and protect the hands of various characters (warriors, mercenaries, adventurers).
- Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) Training: For safer practice of techniques.
- Theatre and Film: As part of historical costumes.
- Potentially also for certain outdoor activities where basic protection and a good grip are appreciated.
Interesting Historical Tidbit:
Hands were extremely vulnerable in combat, which is why considerable attention was paid to their protection. Although these padded mittens didn't offer the same level of protection as the plate gauntlets of knights, for common soldiers, they represented a significant improvement over bare hands and could mean the difference between keeping hold of a weapon and painfully dropping it after a hit.
Product Care:
- Cleaning: Due to the combination of fabric and leather, spot cleaning is best. Wipe the fabric part with a damp cloth, possibly with a little mild soap. Clean the leather palm with special leather cleaners or just wipe it lightly. Avoid soaking the entire mitten.
- Drying: If the mittens get damp, let them air dry naturally at room temperature, stuffed with paper to maintain their shape. Do not dry on a radiator or in direct sunlight.
- Leather Maintenance: From time to time, you can treat the leather palm with a suitable leather conditioner to keep it supple.
