Viking Leather Belt 'Birka', Horse & Snake, 3 cm
A Detailed Replica with a Rich History
This Viking belt is not just an ordinary accessory, but a piece of living history. It was crafted based on an archaeological find from grave no. 750 in Birka, Sweden, one of the most important trading centres of the Viking era. Every detail, from the horse heads on the buckle to the intertwined serpentine body on the strap end, has been carefully reproduced. The belt is made from approximately 3.5 mm thick buffalo leather, which is drum-dyed to ensure a deep, long-lasting colour with an elegant matte finish. The solid, cast brass buckle and chape not only look fantastic but are also fully functional and durable.
How to Properly Wear a Long Viking Belt
Long belts were characteristic of the Vikings. They were used not only to cinch clothing but also as a status symbol and a practical item for hanging a knife (seax), pouch, or other necessities. Wearing it is simple and stylish:
- Pass the belt through the buckle and tighten it around your waist.
- Tuck the loose end of the belt underneath the already tightened part of the belt, right next to the buckle.
- Then, pull the end over and through the loop you've just created.
- Gently tighten the knot. The end of the belt will now hang down elegantly.
This simple 'belt knot' ensures the loose end stays out of your way while making you look like a true Viking.

The Treasure from Grave 750 in Birka
The original artifact for this belt comes from one of the richest graves in Birka. Birka was a key port and trading hub where people from all over the known world of the time, including Europe and the Middle East, would meet. The finds from its graves provide us with an invaluable insight into the life, art, and crafts of the Norse warriors and traders. The Jelling style, named after royal finds in Denmark, is typical of the 10th century and is characterised by elegant, intertwined animal motifs, perfectly represented by the snake on this belt's chape.
Caring for Your New Belt
To ensure your belt serves you for many years and continues to look great, we recommend proper care.
- Leather: Protect the belt from prolonged exposure to water. If it gets wet, let it air dry at room temperature (never on a heater!). Occasionally treat the leather with a leather care product (wax or oil) to keep it supple and prevent cracking.
- Brass: The brass parts may develop a natural patina over time, which enhances the historical look. If you prefer a shine, you can gently polish the buckle and chape with a soft cloth and a metal polish.
