Medieval Leather Belt Eske with Massive Winged Buckle

Historical and Fantasy Context of the Belt

Belts were among the most important items of clothing throughout the Middle Ages. Because period tunics and trousers lacked pockets, the belt served as the primary carrier for personal equipment. Daggers, coin purses, fire strikers, and drinking horns were suspended directly from it. The motif of wings or feathered ornaments on fittings often appeared in history as a symbol of speed, protection, and majesty. Today, this particular design is immensely popular not only among reenactors but also in the LARP and cosplay community, where it perfectly complements the costumes of rangers, elves, or noble warriors. The buckle is hand-sewn to the strap using strong linen thread, fully conforming to traditional leatherworking practices.

How to Properly Wear and Tie the Belt

The length of 150 cm (59 inches) is standard for historical belts, allowing for the traditional method of tying. You simply fasten the belt at the buckle, pass the long free end underneath the fastened strap from the bottom up, and thread it down through the resulting loop. This creates a secure knot, while the remainder of the strap hangs casually down the leg. To ensure the belt fits you perfectly over any layers of clothing (from a thin linen shirt to a thick gambeson), it is supplied without pre-punched holes. Using a leather hole punch, you can easily create holes tailored exactly to your waistline.

Proper Genuine Leather Care Instructions

This high-quality belt is made of genuine cowhide leather with an honest thickness of 4 mm (0.16 inches). Minor variations in colour and surface texture are natural properties of this material and make each piece a unique original. To ensure the leather maintains its extreme strength, flexibility, and durability over the long term, it requires regular care. We recommend treating the strap at least once a season, or after getting wet, with a high-quality leather balm based on beeswax. Never dry the leather near a direct heat source (radiator, hairdryer, open campfire), otherwise it could harden and crack.

Crucial Warnings

The belt is designed as a clothing accessory for historical fencing, LARP, and leisure. It is in no way a certified safety device. Never use it to secure people against falls or for pulling excessively heavy loads, as this could cause irreversible damage to the buckle or tear the leather.

Recommended Accessories

For an absolutely flawless look, we highly recommend purchasing a spacious leather pouch and a sturdy weapon frog from our range of period equipment to accompany this belt.
