Detailed Description of the Shield

This scutum-type shield features the classic rectangular and curved shape that was typical for the Roman legions. Its surface is painted a deep red colour, which symbolized the Roman god of war, Mars. The red background is adorned with a striking, hand-painted design in a golden hue. The dominant motif features two pairs of stylized eagle wings surrounding a thunderbolt bundle – symbols of victory and the power of the god Jupiter.

The centre of the shield is protected by a large, polished steel boss, known as an umbo. The entire edge of the shield is reinforced with a brass rim, adding to its authenticity and protecting the wooden structure. The back is reinforced with wooden slats to maintain its shape and strength. A sturdy wooden handle for a horizontal grip is located inside the boss.

The Scutum in History: The Shield That Conquered the World

The rectangular, curved scutum became synonymous with the Roman legionary during the late Republic and for most of the Imperial period. Its design was not accidental. The curve effectively deflected sword and axe blows, while the metal boss (umbo) served not only to protect the hand but also as an offensive weapon to punch and stun an opponent.

However, the scutum's greatest strength was revealed in formation combat. Legionaries could lock their shields together to create an almost impenetrable wall, known as the testudo (tortoise). This tactic provided them with perfect protection from projectiles and allowed them to safely approach enemy lines and strike with their short gladius swords.
