15th Century Infantry Kettle Hat (Chapel-de-Fer)
The Foot Soldier's Essential Defence. Rooted deeply in the warfare of late medieval Europe, the kettle hat—also known as the chapel-de-fer—is a symbol of the common soldier. Its iconic wide-brimmed design offered superb protection from overhead attacks like arrows and downward sword strikes, while leaving vision and breathing completely unobstructed. This practicality made it the helmet of choice for infantrymen, archers, and crossbowmen across the battlefields of the Hundred Years' War and the Wars of the Roses. Further product information ...

An Icon of Medieval Warfare
The practicality of the chapel-de-fer cannot be overstated. Its wide brim was no mere decoration; it deflected arrows, falling debris during sieges, and downward blows from opponents on higher ground. It also shielded the wearer from sun and rain, making it a versatile and indispensable piece of equipment for any soldier.
A Note on Handcrafted Authenticity
Every helmet is individually handmade. Slight variations in surface texture, rivet alignment, or liner stitching are expected and are a hallmark of genuine artisan craftsmanship, adding to the unique character of each piece.
Caring for Your Helmet
Proper maintenance will ensure your helmet has a long and glorious service life.
- Your helmet arrives coated in a protective layer of oil. Simply wipe it clean with a dry cloth or paper towel before first use.
- After each use, wipe the helmet dry inside and out to remove moisture.
- Periodically apply a thin coat of mineral oil or a protective wax to the steel surface to prevent rust.
- Use a leather conditioner on the liner and chin strap occasionally to keep them supple and prevent cracking.
