German Closed Helmet (Mantelhelm) c. 1560 – Handmade Knight's Replica

A Detailed Look at the Helmet's Construction and Appearance

This closed helmet is a typical example of 16th-century European armoursmithing, structurally derived from the armet. The helmet bowl is smoothly rounded, and a low but distinct narrow crest runs along its top, which not only strengthened the construction but also served an aesthetic purpose. The most characteristic feature is the two-piece tilting visor, shaped into the typical "sparrow-beak" form that helped deflect enemy blows. Its upper section features a narrow vision slit, while the lower part (protecting the chin and mouth) is equipped with ingeniously placed ventilation holes – these are arranged in a cross shape on both cheek areas and supplemented by other individual holes to ensure sufficient airflow. The entire visor is mounted on robust side pivots and is secured in the closed position by sturdy hook-and-eye clasps. The neck protection of the helmet, the gorget, consists of several articulated lames that protect the neck from all sides while allowing head movement. The gorget is divided into front and back halves for easier donning. The gorget lames are adorned with brass rivets, and their edges are elegantly roped, a typical decorative element of the period.

How You Can Use This Helmet

This replica German closed helmet is ideal for:

  • Historical Reenactment: It will perfectly complement your plate armour for the late Renaissance period (circa mid-16th century), whether you are portraying a German knight, a Landsknecht, or another man-at-arms.
  • LARP: For characters requiring maximum protection and an authentic appearance (always considering the rules of the specific event).
  • Collecting: As a valuable and detailed exhibit for your collection of historical armour and militaria.
  • Decoration: An imposing element for interiors, studies, or historically themed club rooms.
  • Theatre and Film: An authentic prop for professional and amateur productions.

Closed Helmets in 16th-Century History

Closed helmets, which evolved from earlier armets, represented the pinnacle of head protection in plate armour during the 16th century. They were an essential part of the equipment for knights, nobles, and heavy cavalry, both on the battlefield and in tournaments. Their construction provided comprehensive protection for the entire head and neck. The "sparrow-beak" shape of the visor was not accidental – its purpose was to deflect lance points and sword cuts as effectively as possible. The term Mantelhelm (cloak-helmet) refers to the way the lower plates of the helmet (the gorget) enveloped the neck and shoulders, much like a cloak, integrating the helmet with the gorget and cuirass. These helmets were often part of complete armour harnesses (garnitures), which could be adapted with exchange pieces for different forms of combat.

A Note on Craftsmanship: Master Armourers

The production of such complex helmets in the 16th century was the domain of highly specialized armourers' workshops, particularly in centres like Augsburg, Nuremberg, or Innsbruck. Each helmet was essentially a work of art, often decorated with etching, gilding, or blackening, reflecting not only the wealth but also the taste of its owner. The option for individual customization, which we also offer for this replica, thus follows a historical tradition.

This helmet is hand-hammered and made in Czechia.

How to Care for Your Helmet to Ensure It Lasts for Ages

  • Rust Prevention: As the helmet is made of steel, it is susceptible to rust. Therefore, keep it dry. After each use, especially if it has come into contact with sweat or moisture, dry it thoroughly.
  • Conservation: Regularly treat the helmet (especially if it has a matte finish without further surface protection) with a thin layer of conservation oil (e.g., WD-40, Ballistol) or a special metal wax. A polished surface can be maintained with a clean, dry cloth, possibly with a small amount of oil.
  • Lining: Always allow the fabric or leather lining to dry properly after use to prevent mould and odours. The leather lining can be treated with a leather conditioner from time to time.
  • Storage: Store the helmet in a dry place, ideally on a stand that ensures good air circulation and helps maintain the shape of the lining. Do not expose it to unnecessarily large temperature fluctuations.
