Black Gothic Leather Tall Boots with Dagged Cuff and Back Lacing

Practical Use and Historical Context

These tall boots represent typical and highly fashionable footwear of the High and Late Gothic periods (14th and 15th centuries). The sharp and elongated toe, known on this type of footwear as a beak or poulaine (crakow), was a clear indicator of social status and wealth. A prominent feature of this model is the wide folded cuff finished with what is known as dagging (or Zaddelwerk in German). This decorative cutting of the edges of fabrics and leather into the shape of leaves, tongues, or battlements was a massive hit across the whole of Europe. Thanks to the practical lacing along the entire back length of the calf, the boot adapts perfectly to the anatomy of your leg and stays firmly in place even when running or fencing.

Material and Construction

The product is finely crafted from durable cowhide leather in black, which over time will acquire a beautiful patina and mould perfectly to your foot. The strong leather laces on the back run through reinforced holes, ensuring a secure tightening without the risk of tearing the material. The smooth sole is constructed to withstand the normal rigours of movement in historical markets, castles, and the unpaved surfaces of medieval encampments.

Sizes and Custom Tailoring

These historical boots are standardly supplied in regular European (EU) sizes. If you choose the custom-made option, the boots are sewn exactly according to your specified body proportions. If you are considering using your own orthotic insoles, it is absolutely essential to physically send these insoles to us before production begins. The manufacturer will permanently and precisely fit them into the shoes so that the boots fit you absolutely perfectly and walking in them remains healthy and comfortable.

Leather Footwear Care

From the workshop, the boots are treated with a premium leather balm containing real beeswax. The balm effectively softens the leather, waterproofs it against morning dew and rain, and gives it a rich black shade. To maintain a long lifespan, regularly clean the boots of mud and dust with a damp cloth. After drying completely at room temperature, apply another layer of balm, conditioner, or high-quality neatsfoot oil. You can also use standard black shoe polish, which is excellent for covering scuffs from weapons and unifying the colour of the entire surface.

Safety and Precautions

We strongly advise that the smooth sole can be very unpleasantly slippery on wet grass, mud, wet stones, or modern smooth floors (tiles, linoleum). Exercise extreme caution when moving in such environments to prevent falls. Never dry the boots in close proximity to an open campfire, on hot stoves, or directly on a radiator. Extreme heat will irreversibly dry out the natural leather, causing it to harden, lose its flexibility, and potentially crack beyond repair.
