Early Medieval Cotton Overdress Gudrun with Gores, Blue-Grey and Brown

Historical Context and Practical Use

The design and cut of this medieval dress are based on documented archaeological finds, such as the 6th-century grave of the Lady of Asseln, and historical illustrations from the early Middle Ages, including the famous 9th-century Stuttgart Psalter. Long upper garments constructed mainly from rectangular pieces of fabric were highly typical for the fashion of this period. To achieve the required hem width and freedom of movement, wedge-shaped pieces of fabric known as gores (Geren) were inserted into the sides. This makes the product absolutely ideal for portraying Vikings, Lombards, Merovingians, and Franks at historical festivals, LARPs, and living history events.

Material and Garment Care

This garment is manufactured from 100% cotton. While early medieval originals were primarily woven from wool or linen, cotton provides a modern, skin-friendly, and highly breathable alternative that is very easy to maintain. To ensure your dress lasts as long as possible and retains its rich colours, we recommend machine washing it at 40°C (104°F) on a gentle cycle. The dress is not suitable for tumble drying; please allow it to air dry naturally. It can be ironed on a medium heat setting.

How to Wear and Important Notices

Historically, this functioned as an overdress (surcoat) offering both representation and protection. It was traditionally worn over a simple, long-sleeved linen underdress or chemise (which forms the white contrast seen in the photos). The back of the neckline features a small slit closed with a button, making it easy to slip the garment over your head. Given the loose cut, it is historically accurate and highly practical to cinch the dress at the waist with a leather belt. As this is a cotton textile product, please exercise caution near open campfires to prevent the fabric from catching fire.

Please note: All accessories shown in the photographs, including the white underdress, leather belt with pouch, axe, drinking horn, torc necklace, and wooden shield, are not included in the delivery. This purchase is exclusively for the blue-grey dress with brown trim.

Recommended Accessories

To achieve a fully authentic appearance, we highly recommend wearing a light-coloured linen underdress beneath this garment. You can perfectly complete the outfit with a long leather ring belt featuring a historical brass buckle, upon which you can suspend a practical leather pouch and a safe holder for your drinking horn. Do not forget to acquire a pair of high-quality period leather shoes.
