History and Usage of the Bliaut

The cut of this dress is based on historical sources and is typical of the so-called Bliaut (or Bliaud), a garment worn in Europe from the 11th to the 13th century. It was originally a courtly overgarment, as the wide flared sleeves were impractical for everyday manual labour. Over time, this fashion trend also spread among the bourgeoisie. A distinctive feature is the large side openings, known as hell windows (Höllenfenster). These gradually increased in size from large armholes down to the hips. Their purpose was to reveal the luxurious underdress beneath. However, the Church disapproved of this revealing fashion, which is how they acquired their infamous name.

Construction and Materials

The dress is made of 100% cotton, an excellent natural material known for its breathability and durability. The side seams are open from the hip to the upper arm and feature lacing. The lacing cords are equipped with metal aglets (nestel points) for easy threading through the stitched eyelets. So-called gores (fabric wedges) are inserted into the sides and centre of the skirt part, creating a generous and flowing hem width. Decorative stitching around the hell windows and sleeve hems enhances the high-quality, authentic look.

How to Care for Your Historical Clothing

To ensure your dress remains in perfect condition for a long time, proper care is essential. We recommend washing the garment in the washing machine at 40°C (104°F) on a gentle cycle. The item is not suitable for tumble drying; instead, let it air dry naturally on a hanger. The dress should be washed separately to prevent any unwanted colour transfer to other laundry. It can be ironed carefully on a medium heat setting suitable for cotton.

Important Notes and Accessory Tips

As this is an overdress with deep side cuts, it is designed to reveal what is worn underneath. Please note: Only the brown overgarment is sold here! The underdress, leather belt, pouch, shoes, and jewellery shown in the photographs are not included. We highly recommend wearing a linen or cotton chemise (underdress) underneath and pairing this Bliaut with a narrow medieval belt and a light veil to achieve an absolutely authentic High Middle Ages aristocratic look.
