Symbolism and Historical Usage
In ancient Greece and Rome, the image of Medusa's head, known as the Gorgoneion, was used as an apotropaic (protective) symbol. It was commonly found on shields, breastplates of emperors and common soldiers alike, and very frequently on the forehead of helmets. It was believed that this symbol protected the wearer in battle. Therefore, this fitting is a historically accurate accessory for any Roman character, whether you are portraying a legionary, a centurion, or a gladiator in the arena.
Installation and Craftsmanship

How to attach the fitting:
- There is a single integrated rivet (stud) on the back of the fitting.
- To install, simply drill a corresponding hole into the base material (leather, wood, or the metal of a helmet).
- Push the stud through the material and peen (hammer flat) the rivet on the other side, ideally using a washer to ensure a tight bond.
- Thanks to the generous 25mm length of the rivet, it can be easily attached even to thick leather belts or padded armour.
Maintenance of Brass Fittings
As this is genuine brass, the fitting may develop a natural patina over time (becoming matte or darkening slightly). If you prefer a high polish, simply clean the fitting with a standard brass cleaner and a soft cloth. Conversely, if you desire a "battle-worn" look, let the patina develop naturally. Avoid using steel wool or abrasive sands, which could scratch the fine details of Medusa's face.
