Late Medieval Splint Arm Harness – 14th/15th Century Style

Historical Construction & Design

Known historically as splinted armour or brigandine limbs, this harness uses a sturdy base of thick genuine leather reinforced with longitudinal steel strips (splints). This clever construction absorbs and distributes the impact of blows while maintaining a high degree of flexibility. The elbow is protected by a solid steel couter (elbow cup) designed to deflect strikes away from the joint.

The harness comprises three integrated sections:

  • Rerebrace: Splinted protection for the upper arm.
  • Couter: A solid steel elbow cup with an articulating lame for movement.
  • Vambrace: Reinforced leather wrapping the forearm.

Usage and Practicality

This arm harness is an excellent choice for LARP, re-enactment, and HEMA training. It attaches securely to your arm using adjustable leather straps with buckles. Crucially, the upper section features leather ties for "pointing" (tying) the armour to your gambeson or arming doublet. This is essential for proper weight distribution and prevents the armour from sliding down during combat.

Safety Note: While crafted from robust 16 gauge mild steel, this armour is designed for re-enactment and controlled sparring. It is not suitable for full-contact heavy combat sports like Buhurt or Battle of the Nations, where tempered steel or titanium is required for safety.

  • Leather: Treat the leather components with beeswax or leather conditioner occasionally to prevent drying and cracking. Avoid storing in damp conditions.
  • Cleaning: Never machine wash. Wipe with a damp cloth and allow to air dry away from direct heat sources.
