How to Use Your Penannular Brooch
Using a penannular brooch is simple but requires the correct method to hold the fabric securely without damaging it.
- Push the pin through the fabric of your cloak at the desired spot (pierce the two layers of fabric you want to join).
- Now, bring the tip of the pin back up through the gap in the ring of the brooch.
- Once the pin is freely in the gap, turn the ring of the brooch 90 degrees (sideways) underneath the pin's tip.
- Let go of the pin. It will now rest on the ring, and the pressure of the fabric will lock it securely in place. You're done!
A Glimpse into History: The Brooch as Jewel and Necessity
Penannular brooches are among the oldest and most widespread types of jewellery in Europe. Their history dates back to the Iron Age, and they were particularly popular with the Celts, Germanic peoples, and Vikings. They served as an absolutely essential practical accessory for fastening a cloak at the shoulder, leaving the hands free for work or combat. At the same time, they were an important indicator of social status. While common people wore simple iron or bronze brooches, wealthy chieftains boasted large and intricately decorated pieces of silver and gold. This hand-forged model with its natural leaf motif is a perfect example of a beautiful and functional accessory for any Norseman or woman.
How to Care for Your Iron Brooch (IMPORTANT!)
As the brooch is made of carbon steel, it is susceptible to rust. However, with proper care, you can ensure its long life.
- Keep the brooch as dry as possible. After use in a damp environment, dry it thoroughly.
- From time to time, lightly coat it with a thin layer of mineral oil (e.g., WD-40). Apply the oil and wipe off the excess with a soft cloth.
- Remove dirt with a dry cloth; avoid using harsh cleaners.
- Store it in a dry place.
