Decorative and Functional Design
This mount isn't just an ordinary piece of metal. It's precision-cast from solid brass, and its design, combining a central circular motif with two triangular (flared) ends, is based on archaeological finds from Viking centres like Birka or Gotland. In the Early Middle Ages, these mounts served not only to strengthen leather straps at junctions but primarily as a decorative element and a status symbol for their owner.
How to Attach the Mount (Guide)
Attaching this mount is simple and provides a permanent, strong bond with the leather. There are two integrated rivets on the back of the mount.
- First, carefully decide on the exact placement and mark it on your leather item.
- Use an awl or a small punch to make two holes in the leather, matching the rivets.
- Push the rivets on the back of the mount through the prepared holes in the leather.
- On the reverse side of the leather, we recommend placing a small metal washer (not included) over each rivet. This increases the strength of the join and prevents tearing.
- Place the mount face-down on a firm surface (an anvil or other hard, flat block).
- From the reverse side, carefully hammer the protruding ends of the rivets flat with a small hammer. This process is called 'peening' and will create a 'head' on the rivet, securing the mount permanently.
