Kettle Hat with Conical Top, 13th Century, 1.6 mm Steel
Reliable Protection and Historical Authenticity
This war hat is carefully crafted with an emphasis on functionality and historical accuracy. The helmet's skull has a simple yet elegant conical shape, which is firmly riveted to the wide brim. It is this shape that ensures blows from a sword, axe, or other weapon slide easily off the surface without causing injury. The 1.6 mm thick mild steel used is suitable for historical fencing and staged battles. However, please note that this is not a certified piece of protective armour for full-contact combat sports like buhurt.
Comfort and Practical Use
Inside the helmet, there is a high-quality, adjustable leather liner (inlay) that allows for size customisation for maximum comfort. A sturdy leather chin strap with a period-style buckle ensures that the helmet stays in place even during rapid movements in combat. for even greater comfort and impact absorption, we recommend wearing a padded arming cap or a coif underneath the helmet.
From the History of the Kettle Hat
The Kettle Hat (in German Eisenhut, in French Chapel de fer) was one of the most widespread and popular types of helmets in the European Middle Ages. It appeared as early as the 12th century and remained popular until the 16th century. Its main advantage was its simple and inexpensive production, which allowed for the mass arming of infantry units. Unlike enclosed great helms, it provided its wearer with unrestricted vision and easy breathing, which was crucial, especially for archers and crossbowmen. The wide brim also offered excellent protection from projectiles fired from castle walls and from overhead strikes.
Care and Maintenance
To ensure this steel helmet serves you for as long as possible and maintains its appearance, it is essential to care for it properly.
- After each use, thoroughly dry the helmet both inside and out.
- Apply a thin layer of oil (a gun conservation oil is ideal, but WD-40 will also suffice) to the steel surface to prevent rust.
- Regularly treat the leather parts with leather care products to prevent them from hardening and cracking.
- Store the helmet in a dry and well-ventilated area.
- CAUTION: Never leave the helmet in a damp environment (e.g., in a damp tent or basement). Moisture is the greatest enemy of steel armour.
