Historical Context and Usage

While the rectangular shields of the later Imperial period are more widely recognised, the armies of the Roman Republic utilised this majestic oval scutum. Its pronounced curvature perfectly protected the legionary's torso from all sides and allowed enemy blows to glance off smoothly. Historically, the scutum was absolutely crucial for tactical formations such as the famous tortoise (testudo). Shields just like this one were behind the success of the Roman legions during the Punic Wars and the conquest of the Mediterranean. The metal umbo served not only to protect the hand holding the grip but could also be used effectively to strike close-standing enemies.

Product Maintenance and Care

To ensure your shield serves you well and looks its best for as long as possible, it requires regular care. The leather edging should be treated occasionally with leather balm or oil to prevent it from drying out and cracking. We recommend protecting the metal umbo with a thin layer of gun oil to ward off atmospheric moisture and rust. Protect the wooden body from prolonged exposure to water and extreme humidity; always let the shield dry naturally in a well-ventilated room after use.

Safe Usage Guidelines

The scutum is a fully functional replica suitable for historical reenactment and formation drills. However, given its substantial weight of 8.5 kg / 18.7 lbs, it is important to maintain proper posture to prevent straining your wrist and arm. When used in contact fencing, avoid extremely heavy strikes from polearms on the edges of the shield, as this could cut through the leather edging and damage the wooden core. The shield is not designed for full-contact heavy combat such as buhurt.

Recommended Equipment for Legionaries

To complete your historical costume, this shield pairs perfectly with an authentic lorica hamata chainmail shirt, a short Roman gladius sword, and a classic Montefortino-style helmet.
