The Art of the "Gripping Beast"
The Borre style, named after a find from Borre in Norway, dominated Scandinavian art in the 9th and 10th centuries. Its characteristic feature is the "gripping beast" motif (Greiftier in German). These are stylised, often animal or mythological figures, whose ribbon-like bodies are intertwined in complex knots. Typically, their paws are depicted firmly grasping either their own bodies or the surrounding ornamental frame. This dynamic and powerful style adorned not only jewellery but also wood carvings on ships, runestones, and weapons. How to Wear Your Brooch
This brooch (or fibula) is designed for fastening heavier fabrics such as woollen cloaks, capes, or tunics. Its use is simple:
- Gather the fabric of your cloak where you wish to fasten it (typically at the shoulder or the centre of the chest).
- Open the sturdy pin on the back of the brooch.
- Push the pin through the gathered fabric. For thick woollens, it is best to guide the pin between the threads rather than piercing them to avoid damaging the fabric.
- Secure the pin in its catch on the back.
- Done. The weight of the brooch will help the cloak to drape correctly.
