In Norse mythology, the ravens Huginn (Thought) and Muninn (Memory) represented the eyes and ears of the god Odin himself. Every day, they flew over the worlds of Midgard and Asgard, bringing the Allfather news of everything that had happened, including the names of brave warriors who had fallen in battle. The raven motif was incredibly popular in Viking Age art and frequently appeared on jewellery, weapons, shields, and as decorative fittings. Instructions for Proper Attachment to Leather
The mounts are supplied as a pair and feature two integral pins on the back, which serve to firmly and permanently attach them to a leather backing. For proper installation, proceed as follows:
- Place the mount in the desired location on the leather and gently mark the position of both pins.
- Punch or drill corresponding holes (diameter approx. 3 mm / 1/8 in) into the leather.
- Push the pins through the holes in the leather. Trim the pins so they protrude about 3 mm (1/8 in) above the thickness of the leather.
- Place brass washers (not included) onto the shortened pins from the back.
- Lay the mount face down on a soft but firm surface (e.g., a piece of thick leather on an anvil) so as not to damage the relief. Then carefully peen the ends of the pins with light hammer strikes.
