Steel Mitten Gauntlets, 15th Century "Shell" Style, 1.6 mm

Who Are These Gauntlets For?

Hands are constantly at risk in combat, making their high-quality protection absolutely crucial. These mitten gauntlets are an excellent choice for:

  • Historical Reenactment and Combat: The mitten design provides outstanding protection for the fingers and is well-suited for portraying knights and men-at-arms from the 14th and 15th centuries.
  • LARP Battles: If you play a frontline character who faces the heaviest blows, these gauntlets will give you the confidence you need and protect you from injury.
  • Tournament Disciplines: Excellent for both mounted and on-foot combat where protection against powerful strikes from polearms or swords is paramount.

Historical Context and Design

In the history of plate armour, there were two main types of gauntlets: fingered and mitten style. While fingered gauntlets offered greater dexterity, mitten gauntlets like these provided far superior protection. The force of a blow was distributed across a single large plate covering the fingers, significantly reducing the risk of them being broken. This is precisely why mitten gauntlets were the preferred choice for heavy combat and knightly tournaments. The design of these gauntlets faithfully replicates this principle. The individual plates covering the back of the hand and knuckles are connected by loose rivets, allowing for full mobility of the wrist and fingers. The wide, flared cuff protects the wrist and allows for easy wear.

A Tidbit from History

The shape of these gauntlets is reminiscent of the famous "hourglass" gauntlets, which were the pinnacle of the armourer's art in the 14th century. They were named for their characteristic tapered waist at the wrist, resembling an hourglass. These gauntlets are often seen in period illustrations and on the tomb effigies of famous knights, such as the magnificent effigy of Edward of Woodstock, known as the Black Prince, in Canterbury Cathedral. To wear a similar style of armour on your hands is to wear a piece of true knightly history.

How to Care for Your Armour

Treat the leather itself occasionally with a suitable leather care product.
