A Glimpse into History: The Targe in Battle

The round shield, known in Scotland as the "Targe," was the quintessential defensive weapon of the Scottish Highlanders from the 16th to the mid-18th century. Warriors carried it on their left forearm, allowing them to effectively parry sword blows and even gain some protection from early firearms. Its construction of wooden planks, covered with leather and reinforced with metal elements, made it a lightweight yet surprisingly durable shield. In combat, it was most often used in combination with a Scottish broadsword (claymore) or a single-handed sword and a dirk.

A Fascinating Piece of History

One of the last and most famous battles where the Targe played a significant role was the Battle of Culloden in 1746. During their famous "Highland Charge," the Jacobite warriors used their targes to block the bayonets of the British government troops, creating an opening for a deadly thrust with a sword. Despite their bravery and traditional arms, the battle was a crushing defeat for the Scots, marking the end of the Jacobite uprisings and the traditional Highland way of life.

How to Care for Your Shield

To keep your shield looking its best for years to come, we recommend following a few simple guidelines. Wipe away dust and dirt from the leather and metal parts with a soft, dry cloth. To revitalize the leather, you can occasionally apply a quality leather conditioner. The brass parts can be gently polished with a metal polishing cloth, but avoid abrasive cleaners that could damage the surface. Store the shield in a dry environment, away from direct sunlight and moisture.
