Crane Wakizashi – Decorative Short Sword by Marto
Artistic Design and Symbolism
The focal point of this short sword is the circular openwork guard (tsuba), depicting a crane (Tsuru). In Japanese mythology, the crane is a symbol of luck, fidelity, and longevity—believed to live for a thousand years. The black handle wrapping (tsuka-ito) contrasts beautifully with the light faux-rayskin background, giving the sword a classic and serious appearance. The scabbard (saya) is made of aluminum with a black finish, ensuring durability and stability.
The blade is crafted from high-quality AISI 420 stainless steel. Although this is a decorative material, Marto has paid close attention to detail. On the edge, you will find a Hamon line, which, while mechanically created rather than traditionally clay-tempered, faithfully imitates the look of a sharp samurai weapon.
Historical Context: The Guardian of Honour
The Wakizashi (literally "side inserted sword") was the inseparable companion of the samurai. While the long katana was the weapon of war, the warrior wore the wakizashi constantly, even indoors where the katana had to be set aside. It served as the "guardian of honour" and the last line of defence. Interestingly, while only samurai were permitted to wear the katana, wakizashi of a certain length (ko-wakizashi) could also be carried by wealthy merchants and travellers (the chonin class) as protection against bandits on the road.
Usage and Safety Warning
It is important to remember that this wakizashi is strictly a decorative item.
- Not for Combat: The stainless steel blade is hard but more brittle than spring steel. It may snap under impact.
- Not for Cutting: The construction is not designed to absorb shock.
- Sharpness: The blade comes sharpened from the factory and has a sharp point. Handle with care to prevent injury.
Care Instructions
Thanks to the stainless steel blade and aluminum scabbard, this sword requires very little maintenance. Simply wipe the blade occasionally with a soft, dry cloth to remove fingerprints (acidic sweat can damage the finish). Avoid using abrasive cleaners that could scratch the surface.
