Chainmail Collar BTW, Bishop's Mantle

A bishop's mantle is a chain mail collar covering the neck, the shoulders and the upper part of the chest and back. It was particularly favoured by the German Landknechte (mercenary soldiers) in the 15th and 16th centuries and is woven similarly to a mail coif. The shape of this piece of chain armour explains its name, as it greatly resembled the very wide-cut collar of a bishop's mantle. More information...

Chainmail Collar BTW, Bishop's Mantle

The bishop's mantles made by Ulfberth are modelled on historical examples. They feature a jagged edge. A riveted leather liner protects the area around the neck and the neckline is adjustable by means of straps and genuine late medieval brass buckles.

The BTW chain maille type: This particular mesh is composed of butted rings made of high-quality spring steel. Considering its excellent value at a fair price, it is perfectly suitable for unexperienced re-enactors who set store on good protection and solid quality. The weave is 4 in 1.

This type is called BTW (Butted Tensile Wire).

Although the natural finish allows rust to develop, it also gives the weave a genuine appearance.
