Short African Stabbing Spear Zulu Iklwa with Ash Wood Shaft

Historical Context and the Birth of a Legend

The Iklwa spear is inextricably linked to the name of the legendary Zulu King Shaka, who implemented a radical military reform in the early 19th century. Until then, African tribes relied primarily on long throwing spears (assegais). Shaka, however, realised that hand-to-hand combat was far more effective. He shortened the shaft and enlarged the blade, creating a deadly thrusting and slashing weapon for face-to-face engagements. A Zulu warrior would grip a large cowhide shield in one hand to deflect enemy attacks and deliver a devastating thrust with the spear in the other. The very name iklwa is said to be onomatopoeic, imitating the sucking sound the spear made when withdrawn from the body of a defeated foe.

The Spear of Destiny - Myths and Facts About the Legendary Relic

Safety Warnings and Intended Use

Although this spear is crafted from high-quality materials and feels very robust, we must draw your attention to safety guidelines. The weapon features a sharp blade and a dangerous point. For safety reasons, this is strictly a decorative item, entirely unsuitable for any practical use such as historical fencing, contact combat, martial arts sparring, or throwing at targets. Using it for these purposes could lead to fatal injuries or the irreversible destruction of the weapon. The spear does, however, serve as a perfect exhibition replica, an authentic prop for theatrical or film productions, or an accessory for a historical costume, provided you exercise the utmost caution to avoid injuring yourself or those around you.

Care and Maintenance of Materials

To ensure this beautiful spear brings you joy for many years and retains its original lustre, it requires regular care. The spearhead is susceptible to surface rust. Therefore, it is essential to keep the steel blade constantly coated with a thin layer of high-quality gun oil. If you handle the spear with bare hands, remember to wipe it down afterwards, as aggressive sweat accelerates corrosion. We recommend occasionally treating the ash wood shaft with linseed oil or wood wax so the natural material does not dry out. The brass wire wrapping can be gently polished with a non-ferrous metal care product if necessary.
