Gilded Court Smallsword with Wire-Wrapped Grip and Folding Guard

Historical Context and the Ingenuity of the Folding Guard

Smallswords became an absolutely essential part of the wardrobe of the European aristocracy, diplomats, and high-ranking officers during the 18th and 19th centuries. They evolved from the much heavier Renaissance rapiers into lighter and more elegant weapons. Initially intended for civilian self-defence in narrow city streets, over time they functioned primarily as an unmissable symbol of social status. The folding (movable) guard featured on this specific model was an ingenious contemporary improvement. The inner clamshell of the guard, pointing directly towards the wearer's body, was simply folded towards the blade. Thanks to this clever mechanism, the weapon did not press into the side and did not ruin the precious silk fabrics of the court tailcoats or elaborate military uniforms of the era.

Decorative Purpose and Safety Guidelines

This smallsword is manufactured with exceptional emphasis on visual authenticity and the detailed craftsmanship of the gold-coloured hilt. However, for safety reasons, we must inform you that this is strictly a decorative item. It is not constructed, and therefore from a safety perspective not intended, for any practical use such as historical or sports HEMA fencing, martial arts practice, man-to-man duels, or test cutting. If used for these purposes, there is a risk of severe injury and irreversible destruction of the product itself. It does, however, represent an absolutely perfect and safe prop for theatrical performances, film shoots, cosplay, LARP (strictly as a non-combat character accessory), and for completing historical uniforms.

Care Instructions for Carbon Steel

To ensure your court sword remains in perfect condition and always looks brand new, regular and proper care is required. The blade is forged from mild steel with a higher carbon content, which is naturally susceptible to airborne corrosion without proper conservation. After every handling of the weapon (aggressive human sweat from hands does not benefit the steel) or after exposure to increased moisture, the blade must be thoroughly wiped down with a dry cloth and preserved with a thin layer of high-quality gun oil. The metal parts of the gold-coloured hilt and the scabbard fittings can be gently polished, if necessary, using special cleaning products designed for the maintenance of brass and non-ferrous metals.
