Function of the Spine Swedge

The most striking feature is the swedge (unsharpened false edge) on the spine near the tip. This is far from just aesthetic. This grind thins the tip to improve piercing capability and allows for more intricate tasks like carving or boring. Furthermore, the spine's edge is ground to a crisp 90-degree angle, making it ideal for striking a ferrocerium rod or scraping fine wood shavings (tinder) for fire starting, all without dulling your primary cutting edge.

The Sheath and Its Secret:

The Surveyor is paired with a high-quality, hand-stitched leather sheath that safely protects the knife and perfectly complements its rustic look. The sheath is equipped with a dangling belt attachment, known as a dangler, which allows for very comfortable carrying, even when you are sitting down or bending over, and makes accessing the knife straightforward. On the back of the sheath, you will surely notice a prominent vyvýšený leather tunnel or loop. This is far from just decorative; it is a dedicated holder for a ferrocerium rod (fire starter). You can firmly place a ferro rod into this loop, keeping your fire-starting tool readily available for use in conjunction with the spine of your knife.

Micarta Handle and Explorer’s Heritage

The Micarta handle scales are the gold standard for outdoor use. This high-pressure laminate is virtually indestructible and impervious to moisture. Its textured surface ensures that the knife will not slip even when your hands are wet or muddy. The name "Surveyor" pays homage to the early pioneers who mapped the frontier and required a single tool to serve as an axe, a knife, and a survival spade.

Maintenance and Safety Guide

The Surveyor comes with a premium, hand-stitched leather sheath. To ensure your knife lasts for generations, we recommend the following:

  • Blade Maintenance: Rinse and dry the knife after contact with salt water or acidic foods. Even 440C stainless steel benefits from basic care.
  • Leather Care: Periodically treat the sheath with leather wax to keep it supple and water-resistant.
  • Safety: The blade is exceptionally sharp out of the box. Maintain a secure stance while chopping. Do not use the knife as a pry bar, as this may damage the tip or the specialized spine grind.

Recommended Accessories

We highly recommend pairing this knife with a quality ferrocerium rod (fire starter), as the spine was specifically designed to strike one. For extended expeditions, add a portable whetstone to your kit to keep your Surveyor in peak performing condition.
