Crusader Battle Axe Antioch 12th Century Replica

Historical Context and Significance

The historical design of this single-handed battle axe dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries during the Crusades in the Holy Land. In the High Middle Ages, axes served as terrifying secondary weapons for knights and foot soldiers alike. While swords represented nobility and social status, the battle axe was built for devastating impact—capable of crushing mail armor, splitting wooden shields, and denting heavy helmets.

This weapon features a heavy carbon steel blade adorned with a distinct cross-shaped perforation. The blackened finish gives all metal components an authentic, battle-worn patina. The axe head is securely riveted to the hardwood shaft and reinforced with long side straps (langets) to prevent the haft from splitting when parrying enemy strikes. The lower grip is wrapped in smooth black leather for a solid hold and finished with a metal ring. Includes a heavy-duty leather sheath for blade protection.

Significance of the Name Antioch

Named after the ancient city of Antioch (modern-day Antakya), which was the site of a pivotal and dramatic siege during the First Crusade in 1097–1098. Naming this battle axe after Antioch pays homage to the fierce warfare and tactical endurance of medieval knights in the Levant.

Usage, Safety and Maintenance

For safety reasons, this sword is a decorative item not intended for practical combat use, such as HEMA sparring, stage fighting, target cutting tests, or combat reenactments. The blade features a sharp edge; handle it with extreme care and never use it for human-to-human dueling.

To protect the high carbon steel from rust, wipe all metal components clean after handling and apply a thin layer of protective gun oil. Keep the wooden shaft and leather sheath stored in a dry environment away from high humidity.
