Viking Bearded Axe "Skeggöx" – Hand Forged Carbon Steel – Ash Handle
Construction and Materials
The axe head is hand-forged from high-quality carbon steel. Hammer marks and a darker patina are intentionally left on the surface near the socket, giving it an authentic, rustic appearance. The edge has a thickness of approximately 1 mm, meaning it is functional and sharp (this is not a blunt training weapon for contact sparring). The shape of the head with the "beard" allows you to grip the axe directly behind the edge, giving you control for fine carving or preparing kindling for a fire.
The handle is made of durable Ash wood. Ash was a sacred tree to the Vikings (Yggdrasil), but more importantly, it is flexible and absorbs shock excellently, which you will appreciate with every strike. The handle has an oval cross-section for a secure grip and is secured in the head traditionally using a wedge and pin.
Historical Context: Why the "Beard"?
The so-called Bearded Axe (Skeggöx) likely originated in the 6th century and was popular throughout the Viking Age. Extending the blade downwards had several advantages. First, it saved valuable material – the smith could forge a long cutting edge with less iron than a full head required. Second, in battle, a warrior could hook the "beard" over the rim of an opponent's shield and pull down their guard. And third, as mentioned, this shape allowed the axe to be used like a plane or knife when working in the camp.

Care Instructions
Since the axe is made of carbon steel, which is not stainless, it requires regular maintenance. After each use (especially in damp conditions), wipe the steel dry and oil it (standard gun oil or WD-40 is sufficient). Occasionally treat the wooden handle with linseed oil or wax to prevent it from drying out and cracking. Store it in a dry place.
