Medieval Forged Damascus Steel Blacksmith Knife with Sheath
The History of the Blacksmith's Knife
This type of all-steel weapon and tool, often simply referred to as a "blacksmith's knife" or "Viking women's knife", has its roots deep in the early Middle Ages and the Viking Age. It was a popular, versatile, and affordable tool for everyday chores, favoured by craftsmen, peasants, and housewives alike. The handle is formed by the extended tang of the blade, which is hot-bent and curled into a decorative spiral (volute) at its end. This serves not only an aesthetic purpose but also prevents the knife from slipping out of your hand. The use of Damascus steel in this model elevates this historically common tool to a breathtaking luxury jewel, whose layered pattern is reminiscent of flowing water.
Principles of Safe Use
The knife comes sharpened and is designed as a fully functional cutting tool for general camp and utility use. For safety reasons, we must strongly warn you that it is under no circumstances a weapon intended for historical contact fencing, reenactment battles, or HEMA training. Using a sharp blade in combat against another person would lead to fatal injuries. The knife is also not intended for heavy prying or target throwing, which could damage its beautiful blade.
Caring for Damascus Steel and Leather
To ensure the knife serves you for many years and retains its gorgeous layered pattern, it requires regular maintenance. Damascus steel is created by forge-welding steels with different carbon contents, which means it is highly susceptible to rust. Never wash the knife in a dishwasher and do not leave it in a damp environment. After each use, wash the blade carefully, dry it with a cloth, and preserve it with a thin layer of high-quality gun or knife oil. We recommend occasionally treating the included brown genuine leather sheath with beeswax or leather balsam to prevent it from drying out and cracking.
