The shield is a defence device for repelling blows and for the personal protection of soldiers. The shield is held in the hand, but must not be attached to the wrist or forearm. By assembling shields to form an adjacent formation (gable wall, turtle, etc.) it is possible to protect entire formations of soldiers.
