Reinforced Steel Buckler – 14 Gauge, 10 Inch Diameter

Built for Close Quarters Combat

This fist shield is crafted from 2 mm thick mild steel (approx. 14 gauge). This superior thickness ensures the shield won't easily dent, even under heavy impact. The front features a prominent central boss (umbo) which provides ample space for your hand and effectively deflects weapon points. The structure is further reinforced by four steel bands arranged in a cross pattern and securely riveted to the shield body. This isn't just for looks – these bands significantly increase the structural integrity of the entire buckler.

The edge of the shield is carefully rolled. This thick rim (approx. 3.7 mm) serves a dual purpose: it strengthens the circumference against deformation and protects both your weapon and your opponent's weapon from unnecessary damage caused by sharp metal edges.

Secure Grip and Handling

The buckler is wielded using a wooden handle positioned within the hollow of the boss. The handle is attached to the shield body with sturdy rivets, so you don't have to worry about it coming loose. The back of the shield is blackened, protecting the steel from corrosion and giving the weapon a professional finish. Weighing approximately 2.8 kg (6.2 lbs), this is a heavier piece that will help you build the necessary wrist strength and stability during training.

Historical Context: The Buckler and I.33

The buckler was an indispensable part of both civilian and military equipment from the 12th to the 17th century. It was not a shield for passive blocking, but an active weapon. It was used to deflect blades, cover the sword hand, and even for "metal on metal" strikes or punches directly at the opponent. The oldest surviving European fencing manual, the I.33 manuscript (circa 1300), is dedicated exclusively to sword and buckler combat, demonstrating just how sophisticated this discipline was.

Care and Maintenance

Since the buckler is made of carbon steel, it is susceptible to rust. To keep it looking like new for a long time, follow these rules:

  • Storage: Keep it in a dry place. Moisture is the enemy.
  • After Use: Always wipe off sweat and moisture with a dry cloth.
  • Preservation: Regularly treat the surface (including the blackened back) with a preservation oil (e.g., WD-40 or a gun oil).
  • Rust: If surface rust appears, remove it with fine steel wool and re-oil the area immediately.

Safety Warning: This product is intended for historical fencing and training. Always prioritize your safety and that of your sparring partner when using it.
