The ship´s wheel is a device used on board a vessel to steer that vessel and control its course. It is connected to a mechanical, electrical servo or hydraulic system that changes the vertical angle of the ship's rudder relative to the hull. On some modern ships, the wheel is replaced by a simple switch that remotely controls the electromechanical or electrohydraulic rudder drive, with the rudder angle indicator providing feedback to the helmsman. A typical ship's wheel consists of eight cylindrical wooden spokes that contained an axle.
