Emperor Wakizashi, Sharp 1060 Steel Blade, Dragon Tsuba
Are you looking for a reliable and elegant companion to your Katana? Or perhaps a shorter, yet fully functional Japanese sword for cutting practice? The Emperor Wakizashi from the renowned brand Cold Steel is exactly what you need. This sword is not just a decoration; it's a precision-crafted tool. Its heart is a sharp blade made from 1060 carbon steel, spring-tempered and hand-polished with a mirror-finish fuller (Bo-Hi). Traditional details, like the handle (Tsuka) covered in genuine ray skin (Samegawa) and wrapped with a tight black silk cord (Ito), ensure an authentic look and a secure grip. The metal fittings (Fuchi, Kashira, and Tsuba) are expertly crafted from nickel silver and feature a striking dragon motif, as seen in the detail photo. Further product information ...
Emperor Wakizashi, Sharp 1060 Steel Blade, Dragon Tsuba
Traditional Design, Modern Performance
The Emperor series by Cold Steel emphasises traditional appearance and materials, which are processed using modern techniques for maximum performance. The Wakizashi historically served as a samurai's auxiliary weapon, worn alongside the longer katana—this pair is known as the daishō. The Wakizashi was ideal for combat in confined spaces, indoors, or for self-defence.
This sword's blade is forged from 1060 carbon steel, known for its excellent toughness and edge retention. It is spring-tempered and professionally sharpened. Thanks to hand-polishing, the blade surface is smooth, and the fuller (Bo-hi) has a mirror finish.
Detailed Craftsmanship
- Fittings (Koshirae): The guard (Tsuba), handle collar (Fuchi), and pommel cap (Kashira) are made from nickel silver (German silver) and are expertly hand-finished.
- Handle (Tsuka): The core is wood, covered with genuine ray skin (Samegawa) and traditionally wrapped with a black silk cord (Tsuka-Ito). Underneath the wrap, there is a brass ornament (Menuki).
- Blade Collar (Habaki): This is also hand-made from nickel silver.
- Scabbard (Saya): The sword comes with an elegant, black-lacquered wooden scabbard and a blue transport bag, which is visible in the photograph.

Sword Care
To ensure your wakizashi serves you well and remains in perfect condition, it requires care. The carbon steel blade is susceptible to rust. After each use, and regularly during storage, wipe the blade with a clean, dry cloth and lightly coat it with oil (e.g., mineral oil or special Tsubaki sword oil). Never leave the sword in a damp scabbard. Store it ideally horizontally or blade-up in a dry environment.
Important Notice
This is a fully functional and extremely sharp sword. It is not intended for contact sparring, duelling, or any form of combat against a person. It is ideal for Kata (forms practice) and Tameshigiri (cutting tests) on appropriate materials (e.g., tatami mats). All use is at your own risk. Handle with extreme caution to prevent serious (or fatal) injury.
This wakizashi forms a perfect daishō pair with the katana from the same series, such as the Emperor Katana (88K).
