Dragonfly Wakizashi, Japanese Short Sword, Sharp 1060 Steel Blade
Are you looking for a shorter Japanese sword that isn't just for display, but is fully functional and adapted for today's warriors? Many replicas on the market are based on historical originals designed for smaller-statured fighters. They may not be optimal for the modern user, who is often taller and stronger. Cold Steel® has therefore created the Dragonfly series. This Wakizashi is designed precisely for you – it features a thicker, wider, and heavier blade forged from proven 1060 carbon steel. The handle (Tsuka) features a genuine black rayskin (Samé) inlay and is tightly wrapped with a striking aquamarine silk cord (Tsuka-Ito). The tsuba (guard) and kashira (pommel) made of black metal bear an elegant dragonfly motif. The strongly curved, hand-polished blade is fully functional and ready for cutting tests. Dragonfly Wakizashi, Japanese Short Sword, Sharp 1060 Steel Blade
Design and Construction
This Wakizashi is not only robust but also aesthetically very pleasing. The details are meticulously crafted:
- Blade (Nagasa): Made from 1060 carbon steel, known for its toughness and ease of sharpening. The blade is deeply curved, hand-polished, and terminates in a long "iris-leaf" point (Kissaki) for maximum cutting and slashing power.
- Handle (Tsuka): Traditionally wrapped with an aquamarine silk cord (Tsuka-Ito) over genuine rayskin (Samé). This combination ensures a firm and secure grip.
- Fittings (Koshirae): The tsuba (guard), fuchi (collar), and kashira (pommel) are made of blackened metal and adorned with a subtle dragonfly motif. Brass Menuki (ornaments) are hidden beneath the wrap.
- Scabbard (Saya): The sword includes a wooden scabbard with a black glossy lacquer finish, which safely protects the sword.
Accessories and Use
Two protective bags are included with every sword:
- A blue cotton bag for regular transport.
- An richly decorated brocade bag made of fine silk for ceremonial storage or display.
This Wakizashi is the ideal choice for those seeking a functional weapon for tameshigiri (cutting tests) on soft targets (e.g., tatami mats, fruit) or for practising kata (forms). It also serves as a robust collector's piece.

Important Notice and Care
WARNING: This is a fully functional and extremely sharp weapon, not a toy. Improper handling carries a risk of serious or fatal injury. The sword is not designed for contact sparring or combat (person-to-person). Always use it with extreme caution and at your own risk.
The 1060 carbon steel blade requires regular maintenance to prevent rust. After each use (even after just touching it with your hands), carefully clean the blade with a soft cloth and apply oil. We recommend a sword care kit (e.g., 010300003) for this purpose. Store the sword in a dry environment. Avoid striking hard objects (wood, bone, metal), which could permanently damage the blade.
This Wakizashi perfectly complements the longer sword in the same series, the Dragonfly Katana (88DK).
