Black Fibreglass Replacement Prod for 175 lbs Recurve Crossbows

Construction and Safe Replacement of the Prod

Always exercise the utmost caution when replacing components on your weapon. The black prod, with an overall length of approximately 70 cm (27.56 inches), is equipped with a reinforced central wrapping that ensures a stable fit within the crossbow's nose (prod housing) and prevents material abrasion. During installation, pay strict attention to achieving absolutely precise centring before finally tightening the central retention screw. This ensures both limbs engage with equal force, preventing deviations in your shooting accuracy. To safely string the weapon into the plastic notches on the end caps, we strongly advise using a stringing aid (stringer cable) or enlisting the help of another person to prevent asymmetrical over-tensioning of the limbs and potential irreversible material damage. This prod is designed for selected models of traditional recurve crossbows (suitable for two specific models).

A Brief Look at the History of Prods and Crossbows

Even though today we rely predominantly on fibreglass and carbon composites when manufacturing modern prods, the history of the crossbow itself reaches back to ancient China and classical Greece. Medieval European crossbows initially used prods carved from solid yew wood. Later, in order to achieve the substantially higher draw weights necessary to pierce increasingly advanced armour, armourers began constructing complex composite prods intricately glued together from horn, animal sinew, and wood. During the late Middle Ages, heavy forged steel became prevalent; while it offered tremendous power and reliability, its significant drawback was extreme weight. Fortunately, today's modern synthetic materials allow us to achieve a high performance of 175 lbs while maintaining the amazing lightness, flexibility, and shape memory of the limbs.

Care, Maintenance, and the Fatal Danger of Dry Firing

To ensure your prod serves you reliably and safely for as long as possible, do not expose it unnecessarily to extreme temperatures (for example, do not leave the crossbow lying in a baking hot car) and always unstring the weapon safely after you have finished shooting. Under no circumstances whatsoever should you dry fire your crossbow! If you pull the trigger without a bolt correctly loaded, all the accumulated kinetic energy will violently transfer back into the limbs of the prod instead of propelling a projectile. This will almost certainly cause immediate snapping, delamination, or catastrophic splintering, posing a very serious risk of severe eye or hand injuries. Always ensure a safe backstop when shooting, check the condition of your string, and never point the weapon at people or animals.

Recommended Crossbow Accessories

To accompany this replacement prod, we highly recommend purchasing a premium-quality Dacron string of the correct length for 175 lbs weapons, a stringer cable for safe and easy string installation, beeswax for regular lubrication to extend the lifespan of the fibres, and a sufficient supply of accurate aluminium or carbon bolts.
