How to Attach the Studs to Leather
Each cross features an integrated post on the back for a secure fitting. Attaching them is straightforward, but it requires the correct procedure and tools to achieve a professional result without damaging the hardware. You will need a hammer, a hole punch, and washers, which are not included in this set.
- Preparation: Carefully mark the spots on your leather where you want to place the studs. Using a hole punch, create holes that match the diameter of the stud's post (approx. 3.1 mm or 0.12 in).
- Placement: Push the post of the stud through the prepared hole from the front of the leather.
- Securing: From the back, place a suitable brass washer over the post. Trim the post with wire cutters so that it protrudes only about 2-3 mm past the washer.
- Riveting (Peening): Place the front of the stud on a soft surface (a piece of scrap leather, felt, or soft wood) to prevent scratching. Using a small hammer (ideally a ball-peen hammer), carefully and repeatedly tap the end of the post. This will spread the metal over the washer, creating a rivet head that permanently secures the stud in place.
Please Note: Washers are necessary for a secure and lasting fit and are not included in this set.
The History of the Maltese Cross ?️
The Maltese cross is a symbol inextricably linked with the Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem (also known as the Knights Hospitaller or the Knights of Malta). This military and religious order was founded in 11th-century Jerusalem, with a mission to care for sick or injured pilgrims and to defend the Holy Land.
A Point of Interest: The Symbolism of the Eight Points
Did you know that the eight points of the Maltese cross have a specific meaning? They are said to symbolize the eight obligations or virtues that the knights swore to uphold. These include the pledges to live in truth, have faith, show humility, be merciful, and love justice. The cross was therefore not just an adornment, but a constant reminder of the chivalric code.
Caring for Your Brass Fittings
Brass is a durable material that develops a natural patina over time. This darkening is not a flaw; on the contrary, it gives items an authentic, historical appearance. If you wish to maintain the original shine, you can occasionally polish the fittings with a soft cloth and a suitable brass cleaner. Always avoid using abrasive sponges or scouring pastes, which could scratch the surface.
