The Wisdom of Odin on Your Garment
Winingas were a key part of a Norseman's clothing, providing warmth, protection, and support for the legs during long marches or sea voyages. Fastening them with hooks was not only practical but often decorative. The raven motif was no accident. In Norse mythology, two ravens, Huginn (Thought) and Muninn (Memory), were the indispensable companions of the god Odin. Every day, they would fly across all nine worlds and return in the evening to whisper everything they had seen and heard into their master's ear. To wear the symbol of the raven was to be under the protection of Odin's wisdom and insight. The interlaced ornamentation on the hook corresponds to the Borre art style, popular in the 9th and 10th centuries.
How to Attach and Use the Hooks
Attaching the hooks is simple and requires only a needle and strong thread (ideally linen for a perfect impression).
- Take the end of your woollen leg wrap.
- Place the flat back of the hook onto the fabric where you want the fastening to be.
- Using the thread, sew the hook securely to the fabric. Pass the thread through the two small holes at the bottom of the hook. For extra strength, you can also use the large central hole.
- When wrapping your leg, leave a small loop on the final wrap, or simply catch the hook onto the previous layer of fabric. The tension of the winingas will hold the hook securely in place.
