Ship's Kerosene Lantern "Cargo 1939", Antique Brass Finish
Designed for a Ship's Harsh Conditions
The design of this lantern is thought out to the last detail for use on cargo ships. A sturdy body with four glass panes protects the flame from the wind. The top and bottom anchoring loops allowed the lantern to be tied down securely to keep it from swinging in a storm, or to be hung on a rope and lowered into the cargo hold. The door is secured by a simple but reliable chained hook latch, and the top chimney is perforated for safe heat dissipation.
How to Operate Your Lantern
This replica is fully functional. To use it, please follow these steps:
- Open the front door of the lantern using the hook latch.
- Inside, at the bottom, is a small oil lamp. Carefully lift it out.
- Unscrew the burner assembly (with the wick) from the lamp's fuel reservoir.
- Fill the reservoir with lamp oil or kerosene (to about 3/4 full to prevent spills).
- Screw the burner back on and allow the wick to soak up the fuel for at least 5 minutes.
- Adjust the wick height using the small wheel on the burner and light it.
- Regulate the flame height so that it is bright but does not produce soot (an ideal flame height is about 2 cm or just under an inch).
- Carefully place the burning lamp back inside the lantern and securely close the door.
An Interesting Fact: Light in the Cargo Hold
In the golden age of maritime transport, before the spread of safe electrical lighting, these lanterns were indispensable. Work continued below deck and in the vast cargo holds even at night. Interestingly, handling an open flame on a ship full of flammable materials like cotton, jute, or coal dust was extremely risky. Cargo lanterns were therefore engineered to be as safe as possible—enclosed, stable, and designed to minimize the risk of fire, which was one of the greatest threats at sea.
