The intricate openwork design showcases the Gripping Beast style (closely related to the Borre or Oseberg art styles). This motif features stylized animals intertwined in complex knotwork, gripping the border or themselves with their claws—a symbol of strength and distinctively Norse artistry. While sometimes referred to as a "Griffin" in modern naming, historically, this represents the zoomorphic designs typical of the Viking Age.
This set of two offers great versatility. For a historical Norse woman's outfit, these brooches are perfect for fastening the straps of an apron dress (hangerok), serving as a lighter, flatter alternative to large oval tortoise brooches. For men, a single brooch is traditionally used to pin a heavy wool cloak at the shoulder, leaving the sword arm free. The second brooch can be used on a bag, a pouch, or gifted to a shield-brother.
