Titanium Chainmail Aventail – Flat Rings, Dome Riveted, Ø 9 mm

Revolutionary Material for the Modern Warrior

The main advantage of this aventail is the material used – titanium. Compared to classic steel, it is approximately 40% lighter while maintaining comparable strength. The entire piece weighs just over one kilogram (approx. 2.3 lbs). That is a difference you will definitely feel during all-day wear at a festival, on a film set, or during a long battle. Furthermore, titanium does not corrode, making it the ideal choice for damp weather where steel would immediately start to rust.

The construction consists of flat rings connected by round rivets (dome riveted). This type of connection is historically accurate and also very resistant to tearing, as the riveting prevents the rings from opening upon impact. The flat profile of the rings ensures a dense weave that covers well, while the round rivet heads add a nice texture to the surface. The aventail has a characteristic dark grey colour, appearing very utilitarian.

Installation and Historical Use

Aventails of this type, historically also known as camails, became the dominant form of neck protection in the 14th century, replacing the chainmail coif worn under the helmet. They were attached directly to the bottom edge of the helmet, most commonly on bascinets or later on sallets.

This model features a sturdy strip of genuine leather (height 2.5 inches) at the top. Installation is versatile:

  • Sewing: You can sew the leather strip directly to the padded liner of your helmet.
  • Vervelles: You can punch holes in the leather and mount the aventail onto metal staples (vervelles) found on the rim of some helmets, securing it with a cord or wire.

How to Care for Titanium Armour

Titanium is every fencer's dream because it requires minimal maintenance. To make your aventail last as long as possible:

  • Cleaning: After use, simply wipe the aventail with a damp cloth to remove dust and sweat. No oiling is needed.
  • Leather: Pay attention to the leather strip. Leather can dry out and crack over time, so treat it occasionally with a suitable leather balm or beeswax.
  • Storage: Store in a dry place to prevent leather degradation.

Safety Warning

Although titanium is a very strong material, this product is primarily intended for stage combat, LARP, film, and theatre. If you plan to participate in full-contact battles like Buhurt or HMB, please check your association's rules. Some organizations ban titanium due to its low weight (it does not meet historical weight requirements) or require specific wire parameters. Avoid strikes with sharp weapons that could cut through the rings, and always ensure you wear a high-quality gambeson under your chainmail.

We recommend pairing this aventail with a high-quality padded collar or arming cap from our range to increase comfort and shock absorption.
