Hand-Forged Hanging Campfire Grill Grate

How to Use the Grill Grate

The main advantage of this campfire grill is its versatility. You can easily hang it by the top ring from a tripod hook and adjust its height over the flames by managing the chain length. As a swing grill, it can be easily positioned for perfect heat. This allows you to achieve the optimal temperature for grilling meat and vegetables or heating food in cookware.

If you don't have a tripod, no problem. The grate can be detached from the chains, flipped over, and thanks to its stable frame, placed directly onto hot embers or stones surrounding your fire pit. This method is ideal for high-heat searing or when you need a stable surface for a kettle or skillet.

History and Open-Fire Cooking

Cooking over an open fire is humanity's oldest culinary technique. In the Middle Ages, the open hearth was the centre of every household and encampment. To regulate temperature, hanging systems were common—cauldrons and pans hung from chains, allowing the cook to move them closer to or further from the heat. Solid grates, known as gridirons, were placed directly in the embers. This product cleverly combines both historical principles.

Interestingly, similar hanging grills were key equipment not only in the field kitchens of armies but also in homes, where they allowed for the preparation of multiple dishes at once. Thanks to its traditional hand-forged construction, this grill is a faithful and functional replica that would have stood up to the harsh conditions of a medieval camp.

Care and Maintenance for a Long Life

To ensure this wrought iron grill serves you well for years to come and maintains its authentic appearance, proper care is essential.

  • Before First Use: The product is coated with a protective layer of oil to prevent rust during shipping. Before you cook on it for the first time, you must season the grill. Burn off the protective oil over a fire, and once cool, clean it with a wire brush and cloth to remove any residue.
  • After Each Use: Once the grate has cooled down, remove any food residue and soot, ideally with a wire brush.
  • Storage: Never leave the grate out in the rain or in a damp environment. After cleaning and drying it thoroughly, wipe it with a thin layer of cooking oil (such as flaxseed or sunflower oil) before storing it in a dry place. This creates a protective barrier against rust.
  • Important Note: Never pour cold water onto the hot grate. The sudden temperature change (thermal shock) could damage the material.
