Hand-Forged Iron Trivet for Campfire Cooking, Medieval Tripod Stand

Authentic Cooking, Just Like in the Old Days

This forged tripod stand is designed with an emphasis on functionality and historical accuracy. Its three legs ensure perfect stability even on the uneven ground of a campsite. The flared, flattened feet prevent it from sinking into soft earth, even when you place a heavy cast-iron cauldron full of stew on it. The triangular frame is ideal for pots with rounded bottoms, but you can also place a wide pan on it without any issues. Your food will cook evenly, and the fire beneath will always have plenty of air.

How to Use Your Trivet

Using it is incredibly simple. Prepare your fire pit and let the wood burn down to a stable bed of hot embers. Then:

  1. Place the trivet directly in the centre of the fire pit on the coals. Make sure it is standing stably.
  2. Place your pot, cauldron, or pan on top of it.
  3. Start cooking! You can easily add more wood or adjust the coals around the stand without having to remove your cookware.

A Glimpse into the Past

Trivets were a fundamental piece of kitchen equipment for centuries, from Roman times through the Viking Age and the entire Middle Ages. They provided a simple and portable solution for cooking in field conditions, on journeys, and in domestic hearths where a fixed pot crane was not available. Their ingenious three-legged design guarantees stability on any surface, which was a crucial feature for military camps or pilgrims. This ancient principle is so effective that it is still used today in modern photographic tripods and surveying equipment.

Product Care

  • After use and once it has cooled, clean the stand of soot and ash, ideally with a dry cloth or a wire brush.
  • To protect against rust, store the trivet in a dry place. Before long-term storage, lightly coat it with an edible oil (e.g., flaxseed or sunflower oil).
  • What to avoid: Never pour cold water on the hot stand, as the thermal shock could cause cracks in the material. Do not leave it out in the rain unnecessarily.
