Medieval Leather Belt Pouch with Embossed Maltese Crosses

Design and Craftsmanship

The pouch features a trapezoidal shape with an elegantly formed flap, adorned with detailed embossing. The pattern consists of a grid of diamond shapes, each containing an embossed Maltese Cross symbol. The sturdy, light-coloured stitching around the edges highlights the pouch's shape and attests to its quality construction. It fastens with a leather strap (approx. 16 mm wide and 2 mm thick) extending from the centre of the flap, which threads through a solid brass buckle (measuring approx. 43 x 28.8 mm) attached to the body of the pouch. Two loops at the top allow for easy attachment to a belt up to 33 mm wide.

Practical Dimensions

  • External dimensions: approx. 20 x 25 cm
  • Pocket depth: approx. 11 cm (110 mm)
  • For belt: max. width 33 mm
  • Weight: approx. 202 g

Who Wore Belt Pouches in History?

Before the invention of pockets, belt pouches and bags were an essential part of attire for men and women across all social classes – from craftsmen, merchants, pilgrims, and soldiers to the nobility. They were used to store and carry all daily necessities: coins, keys, personal seals, small tools, tinderboxes, writing implements, or even amulets and small personal items. They were a symbol of practicality and often social status, decorated according to the owner's means.

Modern Uses

This pouch is ideal for:

  • Historical Reenactment and LARP: Perfectly complements your 14th and 15th-century costume.
  • Medieval and Fantasy Fairs: Stylishly store your wallet, keys, and mobile phone.
  • Original Fashion Accessory: Stand out from the crowd and add a unique historical touch to your outfit.

A Historical Tidbit

Did you know that the contents of a belt pouch could reveal a lot about its owner? Finding coins from a specific region, particular tools, or personal items could hint at their profession, origin, or travels.

Caring for Your Pouch

To ensure your leather pouch lasts a long time and maintains its appearance:

  1. Cleaning: Wipe away dust and minor dirt with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Do not use soap or detergents.
  2. Conditioning: Occasionally (once or twice a year, or when the leather feels dry), you can apply a very thin layer of colourless leather balm or conditioner. Always test on an inconspicuous area first.
  3. Moisture: Protect the pouch from getting soaked. If it gets wet, let it air dry naturally at room temperature, never on a radiator or in direct sunlight.
  4. Storage: When not in use, store the pouch in a dry, ventilated place, ideally in a breathable fabric bag to allow the leather to breathe. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to prevent the colour from fading.
