Viking Spectacle Helmet Gorm | 1mm Steel, Leather Liner
Construction Inspired by History
This helmet is based on the spangenhelm construction type, which was dominant in the Early Middle Ages. The dome is made of 19 gauge (1 mm) steel plates, connected by riveted bands. The most striking feature is, of course, the "spectacle" eye and nose guard (ocular), which gave this type of helmet its name and was made famous by the archaeological find at Gjermundbu in Norway. Unlike many other models, this piece is also equipped with steel cheek plates, which protect the face but are hinged to allow for speaking and head movement.
Comfort for Long Wear
Since we know you might spend the whole day in the helmet at an event, the Gorm model is equipped with a high-quality adjustable leather liner (suspension). This acts as a shock absorber and ensures the helmet sits firmly without pinching. You can secure it under your chin using a sturdy leather strap with a period-appropriate buckle.
Usage and Safety
It is important to know what this helmet is best suited for. Given the material thickness (approx. 19 gauge / 1 mm), this falls under Class C – Costume and LARP Armour.
- Perfect for: LARP, theatre, film, cosplay, parades, and as striking home decor.
- Not suitable for: Full-contact historical fencing, reenactment battles with steel weapons, or buhurt. The material is too thin for these purposes, and the helmet could deform, potentially causing injury.
Helmet Care
This is a carbon steel product, which is prone to rust. To make sure your helmet lasts for ages:
- Keep it dry. After every use (when you sweat), let it air dry thoroughly.
- Regularly treat the surface and interior with preservation oil (e.g., WD-40, Ballistol, or gun oil).
- If surface rust appears, remove it with a fine abrasive pad and re-oil the spot.
