Narrow Renaissance Leather Belt with Decorative Silver Buckle
Historical Context and Renaissance Fashion
During the Renaissance period, the belt ceased to be merely a piece of leather for holding up trousers or tunics and became an important fashion accessory that reflected the taste and status of its wearer. Narrow belts with elaborately crafted metal buckles were immensely popular. They did not only serve an ornamental purpose but also had a highly practical function – it was customary to suspend a personal dagger, a coin purse, keys, or an essential leather pouch for small items from them.
How to Properly Wear and Tie the Belt
The length of 150 cm (59 inches) is not without purpose for a historical belt. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the belt was fastened at the buckle, and the long, loose end was then passed underneath the fastened strap from the bottom up, and threaded down through the resulting loop. This created the characteristic historical securing knot, leaving the free end hanging casually down the leg. To ensure the belt fits you perfectly over any costume layers, it is supplied without pre-punched holes. Using a leather hole punch, you can create the holes exactly where your waist circumference requires them.
Proper Genuine Leather Care Instructions
This high-quality product is handmade from genuine cowhide leather with a respectable thickness of nearly 4 mm (0.15 inches). Slight variations in colour and surface texture are natural properties of this noble material, making every single piece a unique original. To maintain its strength, flexibility, and long-term durability, the leather requires regular maintenance. We recommend treating the strap at least once a season with a high-quality leather balm based on beeswax. Under no circumstances should you dry the leather near a direct heat source (radiator, hairdryer, open fire), as it could harden and crack irreversibly.
Crucial Warnings
The belt is designed as part of a historical costume and a clothing accessory. It is in no way a safety device. Never use it to secure people against falls or for pulling heavy loads, as this could damage the buckle or the strap itself.
