High Gothic Leather Belt with Twisted Spectacle Buckle

Historical Context and Usage

Double-loop buckles, frequently referred to as spectacle buckles, experienced their greatest popularity during the High and Late Gothic periods, roughly in the 14th and 15th centuries. This type of fastening was immensely popular across all social classes, from common craftsmen and mercenaries to the lower nobility. At that time, a belt did not merely serve to hold up clothing; it was the carrier of all daily equipment – pouches, daggers, bells, and purses were all suspended from it.

How to Properly Wear and Tie the Belt

The length of 150 cm (59 inches) is not without purpose for a historical belt. In the Middle Ages, the belt was fastened at the buckle, and the long, loose end was then passed underneath the fastened strap from the bottom up, and threaded down through the resulting loop. This created the characteristic medieval knot, leaving the free end hanging casually down the leg. To ensure a perfect fit, the belt is supplied without pre-punched holes. Using a leather hole punch, you can create the holes exactly where your waist circumference (or costume layers) requires them.

Proper Leather Care Instructions

This item is handmade from genuine cowhide leather with a thickness of almost 4 mm (0.15 inches). Slight variations in colour and surface texture are natural properties of this material, making every single piece unique. To maintain its strength, flexibility, and long-term durability, the leather requires regular maintenance. We recommend treating the strap at least once a season, or after it gets wet in the rain, with a high-quality leather balm based on beeswax. Under no circumstances should you dry the leather near a direct heat source (radiator, open fire), as it could harden and crack.

Recommended Accessories

To perfectly complete your period look, we highly recommend purchasing a medieval leather pouch and a stylish dagger or sword frog from our selection to accompany this Gothic belt.
