What is LARP?

LARP stands for “Live Action Role Play”. It’s interactive storytelling where everyone steps into a character – not just dressed up, but fully living the role. The goal is to bring your character to life as authentically as possible, while collaborating with others and unfolding a story in real time. You can think of it like improvised theatre with no audience.

You’re not performing for anyone, you’re simply living your role - whether it is in the woods, at a castle, or in the middle of a city. If that sounds like an RPG game, you're not far off – only this time, you're physically in the game.

Types of LARP: There’s Something for Everyone

There’s no one-size-fits-all in LARP. Here's a quick look at the most common types you’ll come across:

• Fantasy LARP – The most popular style, often inspired by well-known fantasy worlds like Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. Expect elves, wizards, magical creatures, and a whole lot of epic adventure.
• Historical LARP – Based on real historical events or historical eras like the Thirty Years' War or the Gothic era. Perfect for fans of history who want to experience a bit of history first-hand.
• Post-Apocalyptic LARP – Set in worlds after a global catastrophe, similar to settings in games like Fallout.
• Urban LARP – Takes place in cities and often explore near-future or alternate realities. Great for those who want to LARP without venturing into the woods.

LARP vs. Cosplay: What’s the Difference?

At first glance, both LARP and cosplay involve costumes – but they’re quite different in purpose and style.

1.    LARP

LARP is all about living your character – not just looking the part. You'll need to act, react, and interact in a way that fits your role.

Costumes are important in LARP, but they need to be practical too – especially since many LARPs happen outdoors, in forests or castles. Mud, rain, and rough terrain are part of the fun.

2.    Cosplay

The main focus of cosplay is on the look – fans dress up as favourite characters from anime, comics, games, or movies. The goal is accuracy, often down to the smallest detail. Some cosplayers spend thousands of dollars on finetuning their costume.

Cosplay, unlike LARP, is not about playing a role. And unlike LARP, most cosplay events happen indoors, and posing for photos is a big part of it.

LARP Gear: What You’ll Need to Join the Adventure

If you’re thinking about joining a LARP event, you will need to start by getting a costume – whether you're aiming to become a mysterious hooded mage or a fully armoured mercenary.

You can either buy a ready-made LARP costume or make your own from scratch. If you're new to LARP, you don't need to spend a fortune on your outfit right away.

Typical LARP costumes typically include:

• Tunic and cloak
• No-zipper trousers
• Belt
• Leather bag
• Armour (especially for fantasy or historical LARP)

Your equipment should also include a suitable weapon of your preference. Available weapons include:

• LARP swords – Soft replicas that look real but are safe for combat.
• LARP arrows – Safe, foam-tipped arrows for archers. They are suitable for shooting at shorter distances.
• Other soft weapons – Maces, axes, spears, daggers – all combat-safe.

Apart from weapons, you can also get LARP shields, quivers, magic staffs, potion vials and other accessories that add both style and practicality to your character.
