Rustic Solid Wood Single Sword Stand - Natural Finish

Functionality and Aesthetics Combined

This type of stand, called katanakake in Japan, is designed for tabletop display (on a chest of drawers, shelf, or mantelpiece). Its simple yet sturdy construction ensures maximum stability. With a width of approximately 33 cm, it provides sufficient support even for longer swords without looking bulky. The natural varnish protects the wood while allowing its texture to shine through, which you will especially appreciate in interiors with natural tones.

Sword Display Etiquette

Did you know that the way you place the sword on the stand carries deep meaning?

  • Edge Up: Always place the sword in its scabbard (saya) with the cutting edge facing upwards. This prevents the sharp blade from resting its weight on the inside of the wooden scabbard, which could dull the edge or damage the oil film.
  • Handle to the Left: If you expect peace and welcome guests with friendly intentions, the handle (tsuka) should point to the left. For a right-handed person, drawing a sword from this position is more difficult and slower. Historically, a handle pointing to the right signalled mistrust and readiness for immediate combat.

Stand Care

Wood is a living material, so it deserves a little attention:

  • Remove dust with a dry, soft cloth.
  • Do not place the stand in the immediate vicinity of radiators or fireplaces, as radiant heat could cause the solid wood to dry out and crack.
  • Occasional polishing with a beeswax-based furniture product will revive the shine and highlight the wood grain.
