Early Medieval Leather Belt with Twisted Mild Steel Buckle
Historical Context and Proper Belt Wearing
The pattern for this type of twisted buckle dates back to the 10th to 11th centuries, the wild era of the Early Middle Ages, when Norse warriors and Norman conquerors roamed Europe. During this time, belts were typically worn long enough so that, after conventionally fastening them into the buckle, they could be elegantly looped under the secured strap. This so-called medieval belt knot ensured that the belt stayed firmly in place even under the strain of heavy war equipment, with its free end hanging effectively down the tunic. If you ever grow tired of the buckle's design, simply untie the connecting leather thong and replace it with another buckle of the same width.
Safe Handling and Leather Care
To ensure the massive cowhide retains its strength and necessary flexibility in the long term, the belt must be properly maintained. We recommend occasionally treating the leather surface with a high-quality beeswax-based balm. Never wash the belt in a washing machine and avoid soaking it unnecessarily. If you are caught in a downpour at a historical festival, let the belt dry naturally and slowly at room temperature. Never dry the leather in close proximity to an open fire or on a hot radiator, as rapid drying would lead to irreversible cracking and hardening.
To accompany this historical belt, we recommend purchasing a spacious medieval leather pouch from our range, which can be easily and safely suspended from it.
