Hardwood Escrima Stick – The Spirit of Kali & Arnis
Usage and Benefits
In FMA, the stick is often used to simulate a machete or sword. This hardwood stick is ideal for:
- Solo Drills (Karenza): The solid weight helps build muscle memory and proper body mechanics.
- Disarming Techniques: The rigidity of hardwood is excellent for practicing leverage and stripping weapons from an opponent's grasp.
- Everyday Defense: Training with this stick teaches you that everyday objects—like an umbrella or a pen—can become effective tools for self-defense.
A Warrior's Heritage
These arts trace their lineage back to the Maharlika, the feudal warrior class of the Philippines. When Spanish colonizers banned traditional blades, the intricate cutting techniques were preserved through stick fighting drills disguised as folk dances. Today, this adaptable art form is renowned worldwide for its practicality, focusing on disarms, angles of attack, and the ability to fight at any range.
Safety and Care
Warning: This stick is made of solid hardwood.
- Not for Full-Contact Sparring: Unlike fibrous rattan which absorbs impact and frays, hardwood is dense and brittle under high-impact stress. Striking another hardwood stick or a hard object with full force may cause it to shatter or splinter, causing injury.
- Use this stick primarily for solo training, forms, and controlled partner drills (low intensity). For full-contact sparring, please use Rattan sticks.
Maintenance
To keep your stick in top fighting condition:
- Oiling: Apply a light coat of linseed or tung oil periodically to prevent the wood from drying out and to maintain a good grip.
- Sanding: Inspect for splinters regularly and sand them down immediately to prevent injury to your hands.
