Traditional Samurai Sword Maintenance Kit with Clove Oil
The Ritual of Blade Care
Japanese swords are traditionally made from carbon steel, which is prone to rust. Therefore, it is essential to clean the blade regularly and preserve it. This kit contains all the key tools:
- Uchiko (Polishing Powder): A ball containing finely ground polishing stone powder. Tapping it on the blade releases dust that binds to old oil and impurities while gently polishing the steel.
- Choji Oil (Clove Oil): A special oil with a distinctive scent that creates a protective film on the steel against humidity and acids (e.g., from fingerprints).
- Mekugi (Pegs): Replacement retaining pegs for the handle. Regular checking and replacement of these pegs are crucial for safety to prevent the blade from flying out of the handle.
How to Use It Correctly
First, remove the old oil from the blade using rice paper or the soft cloth included in the package. Then, gently tap the blade with the Uchiko ball to dust it, and wipe it again with a clean cloth – this removes residual dirt. Finally, apply a small amount of clove oil and spread it evenly along the entire length of the blade to create a thin, invisible film. Ideally, repeat this process every 3 months or always after training or touching the blade with bare hands.
